Officer
Acquitted – September 2004
September
2004: Officer McKenzie Mattingly formerly of the
Louisville Metro Police Department was acquitted
on all charges of murder and wanton endangerment
first degree.
Officer
Mattingly faced charges stemming from a shooting
of a 19 year old after an undercover drug deal
turned violent in January 2004. Mattingly was
charged in March and fired from the police force
in April.
Represented
by FOP Legal Defense Plan attorneys Steven Schroering
and John Dolan, Officer Mattingly was faced with
attorney fees in excess of $80,000 for the criminal
trial alone. He was acquitted on criminal charges
and is now in the process of trying to get his
job back. The FOP Legal Defense Plan defended
and paid all defense costs on behalf of Officer
Mattingly.
His
administrative hearings have begun and the attorney
costs are beginning to add up, already approaching
$8,000. FOP Legal Defense Plan attorneys Mark
Miller and Mary Sharp are handling Officer Mattingly's
administrative defense.
In
summary, could you as an officer or a lodge be
able to financially support the defense costs
that were needed to successfully handle this case?
This proves again how the FOP Legal Defense Plan
is an excellent defense partner for its membership.
