One client experienced such an attack.
An employee at a large manufacturing company received what appeared to be a routine email from the company’s philanthropist president. Included was a request for a $21,000 wire transfer to the accounting department. Emails were exchanged between the accounts payable department and the email sender, and the funds were ultimately transferred.
Three weeks later, a similar request of $98,000 was submitted. Accounting advised the CFO, who called the president to confirm the request. The president said she had not sent the request, and upon investigation discovered the previous request was also fraudulent.
