How to Read and Understand Food Labels

Do you read the Nutrition Facts food labels when you shop? Since 1994, the United States Food and Drug Administration has required nutrition information to be placed on most food packaging. These food fact labels are easy to find on the back, side or bottom of the packaging.

Reading the label will help you choose foods that make up a healthful diet. Eating a healthful diet can help reduce your risk factors for some diseases. For example, too much saturated fat and cholesterol can raise blood cholesterol (a risk for heart disease). Too much sodium may be linked to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

The Biggest Losers Might Be Your Employees

Although "The Biggest Loser" television show is incredibly popular with viewers, it is perhaps one of the most damaging shows ever broadcast. It perpetuates harmful myths about body weight, weight loss, exercise and health – and it does so with punishing exercise regimens, shaming, untelevised extreme deprivation, and even, according to one contestant, misrepresentation of time. While many in the health promotion industry understand that "The Biggest Loser" is unrealistic, it is important to consider the damaging effects of the biggest loser weight loss contests at work too – even when they're called "The Biggest Winner!"
